Update on the Urban Eatery and Culinary School

Sorry it took my a while to post my updates, I started to run in a little wild with the façade and massing of my model. I decided to go back to my original design of the hybrid model and create an arch over the eatery. The massing on the top is where the culinary school is located, creating a space between the eatery and the school. The maximum height is 60' and the culinary school starts 45' high. The roof top restaurant for the culinary school is located on the corner, and it is 2 floors. There is a bridge connecting the two massing where the library will be located. I'm considering adding a bridge for the eatery to connect them.

  1. Hi, Stephanie! I like your images because they show clearly your effort to investigate how people will move through your building and experience your architecture - well done! It would be useful to see your model within its immediate urban context as one of your professors has already suggested (a very simple 3D model of the immediate site with simple blocks representing the surrounding buildings would be more than adequate). Regarding the envelope / facades of your design: how are you approaching this? Will all the uses and functions be inside and "hidden" from the outside? Also, do you have any thoughts on how an Urban Eatery could look like from the outside? When I googled the phrase "urban eatery architecture" approximately 95% of the images retrieved were from the inside of buildings. Also, think about the materials.

  2. I totally agree. The project needs a location and scale. Please place it on the site.

  4. Hello Stephanie. Your massing is compelling but you need to push these 3d diagrams you present here into becoming an actual piece of architecture.
How do you engage with the existing context?
How do you address the immediate landscape (paths that bring the visitor in your building etc) ?
Circulation within? How do you circulate vertically?

It seems that you have a series of fluid spaces that are inside a "wrapper". You need to add more definition :Think about creating mezzanines in order to add hierarchy in your space organization. Right now all the micro-environments you have in the ground floor are the same. You need to think about scale
What is this wrapper? some kind of a net that carries greenery? glass? opaque partition walls?

I recommend that you also work in section! It is a bit strange how you mainly have two levels in height that are pretty disproportional. The lower part of your composition (45' height) needs to address/ "exploit" this height in section.

  5. I want to see more connection with the geometry of the food court and the school above - below is so exciting and I do not see the relationship with the geometry above.
